The Bartercard Gold Coast Blue Tongues faced off against the Melbourne Ice in a double header this weekend at Iceland Bundall for the last home game weekend of the Blue Tongues 2011 season. Currently in fourth place on the AIHL ladder, the Blue Tongues were determined to skate away with as many points as they could from the crucial games being played this weekend.
On Saturday, the Blue Tongues' goaltender Luke Fiveash faced 36 shots on goal, and saved 33 of them. Melbourne's Jason Baclig (assisted by Austin McKenzie and Jacques Perrault) scored in the first period, and Joey Hughes (assisted by Jacques Perrault and Matt Armstrong) and Glen Mayer (assisted by Jason Baclig and Obi Aduba) scored in the second period.
The Blue Tongues, however, put 32 shots on Melbourne's Stu Denman, who saved 27. Blue Tongues goals were scored by Adam Geric (assisted by Dave Upton and Alex Hall) and Tobias Falk (assisted by Mike McRae) to give the Blue Tongues a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period. In the second, Tobias Falk scored 2 goals for his hatrick (first goal was assisted by Matt Amado and Mike McRae and the second goal was unassisted) to give the Blue Tongues a 4-3 lead going into the third period. With 24 seconds left in the game, Matt Amado (assisted by Tobias Falk and Mike McRae) scored the fifth and final goal to give the Blue Tongues a 5-3 victory.
The first period was infringement free, and only one penalty was called in the second period, which was a tripping infringement on Melbourne's Jacques Perrault. This penalty gave the Blue Tongues a man advantage which Tobias Falk capitalised on and scored his first goal of the second period. The third period also looked to be infringement free until the final 21 seconds of the game when Melbourne's Joey Hughes and Gold Coast's Tobias Falk were both sent to the dressing room for roughing. Tobias also had a holding penalty added on, while Joey landed an interference and a ten minute misconduct penalty.
Sunday's game, however, was a vastly different. The Blue Tongues once again had Luke Fiveash starting between the pipes, backing up from his victory the previous night. Melbourne decided to rest starting goaltender Stu Denman and start their backup goaltender, Andrew Crowther. The teams lined up for the opening puck drop to a packed out crowd at Bundall Iceland.
The Blue Tongues opened the scoring when Tobias Falk (assisted by Mike McRae and Matt Amado) scored less than a minute into the game on a very pretty goal. The Melbourne Ice evened up the score two minutes later when Lliam Webster (assisted by Matt Armstrong) lifted the puck past Fiveash while both teams were 4-on-4 due to penalties. A mere ten seconds later, Gold Coast's Matt Amado (assisted by Tobias Falk) gave the Blue Tongues a 2-1 lead. A minute and a half later Dave Upton gave the Blue Tongues a 3-1 lead (assisted by Adam Geric and Jack Connor).
The wheels fell off the proverbial cart from this point on, as penalties called on both teams combined with smart play by the Ice and questionable decision making by the Blue Tongues saw the 2 goal lead diminish. Melbourne's Obi Aduba (assisted by Joey Hughes and Jason Baclig) scored on the powerplay to close the gap to 3-2, then scored again a minute later when Jacques Perrault intercepted the puck in the neutral zone, passed to Joey Hughes on a breakaway, who passed to Obi Aduba to lift the puck past Fiveash to tie the game while shorthanded. With only 48 seconds left in the first period, Tommy Powell scored (assisted by Jason Baclig) to give the Ice a 4-3 lead at the end of the first period.
The rest of the game remained scoreless until Melbourne's Jason Baclig scored an empty-netter unassisted with 16 seconds left on the clock to give the Melbourne Ice a 5-3 victory. The game was riddled with game misconducts and roughing penalties called on both teams with a total of 194 penalty minutes handed our by ref Mark Obrien. The flow and demeanor of the game was vastly different to that of Saturday's game.
The Blue Tongues were 2 points ahead of Adelaide Adrenaline before tonight's game, and with Adelaide's loss in a shootout tonight to Newcastle Northstars, the Blue Tongues remain in fourth by 1 point. The team head south to Melbourne next weekend to once again face the Melbourne Ice at the Icehouse on August 13, 2011. Puckdrop is 5.45pm and the game should be streamed live online via http://www.livestream.com/melbourneice
The Bartercard Gold Coast Blue Tongues clawed their way into the top four for the first time this year taking home four of six points on offer in Melbourne over the weekend.
The anticipated match was always going to be on Saturday against the defending champions and league leading Melbourne Ice. The Ice have only lost one game all year, and with the Blue Tongues facing the Ice four times in these next three weeks a statement had to be made. Playing to a capacity crowd of over 1000 parochial Ice fans the Blue Tongues fought back to even the score at 2-2 with less than 5 minutes to play in the game. The defence and starting goalie Luke Fiveash did an outstanding job to keep the Ice from scoring in the dying minutes, and the game went to a shoot out. Unfortunately, the home team prevailed and the Ice won in the shoot out, however the statement was made. Melbourne Ice could not put away the Blue Tongues in their own home rink, which was something the Ice had been able to do all season with every other team in the league.
Ross Howell and Mike Mcrae were the goal scorers whilst all the forwards on the Blue Tongues will look to increasing the pressure and 12 shots on the Ice defence and goalie next time they meet Ice here on the Gold Coast this coming weekend.
Yesterday afternoon in Melbourne the Blue Tongues took on the AIHL’s newest franchise the Mustangs, and though the Blue Tongues were always respectful of the Mustangs ability it was a game they were expected to win. The 6-4 defeat by the Blue Tongues over the Mustangs was their third of the season over a very energetic young team who will improve next year.
The goal scorers included Mike Mcrae with two, and one goal by Matt Amado, Alex Hall, Ross Howell, and Bob Sannemo. Sannemo also collected three assists in the game, and his four points were most welcomed as were the four points by Mike Mcrae and Tobias Falk. Goaltender Luke Fiveash started the game, and since an injury that sidelined him for the whole season, Luke has now not lost a game in his last five starts since coming back. The Blue Tongues had the luxury of going to Melbourne with the availability of just about their full squad, and the ability to run with three full lines was certainly a positive in their success over the weekend.
The Blue Tongues have their final two home games of the season on the Gold Coast this weekend, and are encouraging everyone to come down to Iceland at Strathaird Road, Bundall and cheer on the Blue Tongues as they take on the Melbourne Ice in two games, Saturday and Sunday in what will be the best hockey the Coast will have seen this year.
A solid finish by the Blue Tongues in their last six games of the year (two at home, two in Melbourne, and two in Newcastle), and a place in the AIHL Finals on 3-4 September will become a reality for a second time in their short 7 year history in the AIHL.
The Bartercard Gold Coast Blue Tongues and the Sydney Bears faced off in the second of the home game double header this weekend at Bundall Iceland on Sunday night. In a relatively clean game, with only 8 penalties called all night (3 on the Blue Tongues and 5 on the Bears), the full house crowd was treated to exciting, end-to-end hockey. The Bears continued to close the Blue Tongues' shooting lanes down in their offensive zone with great positioning and communication on the ice. The Blue Tongues, putting 46 shots on the Bears' goaltender, Sheldon Baerg, hit the post or the cross-bar more times than they'd like to.
Matt Amado opened the scoring halfway through the first period with the lone goal of the period to give the Blue Tongues the 1-0 lead, assisted by Mike McRae, just 20 seconds after Bears' Assistant Captain Brett Nelson-Bond returned to the ice from a slashing penalty. The Bears had managed to kill off all three penalties sustained in the first period, and the teams went to the first intermission with the Blue Tongues leading 1-0.
In the second period, the Blue Tongues killed off a slashing call on Matt Amado. At 9 minutes and 48 seconds, just 14 seconds after Amado returned to the ice from the slashing penalty he served expired, he scored his second goal of the night, assisted by Dave Upton. Just 10 seconds later, Mike McRae sank the puck past Baerg, assisted by Tobias Falk and Matt Amado. Scoring his hatrick, Matt Amado netted the third quick goal in 21 seconds, assisted by Mike McRae and Tobias Falk.
The Bears narrowed the gap to 4-1 when Tony Demelinne scored an unassisted goal with 8 minutes and 20 seconds left in the second period. The crowd was treated to some of the most entertaining and exciting hockey of the season for the rest of the second period as both teams battled for the puck and continued to check each other on open ice and along the boards. They went to the second intermission with the Blue Tongues leading 4-1.
The Bears closed the gap again to 4-2 thanks to a goal by Michael Schlamp, assisted by Brett Nelson-Bond and Tony Demelinne only 1 minute and 25 seconds into the third period. The Bears were unable to close the gap any further though. When Matt Amado smashed the puck past Sheldon Baerg with 8 minutes and 58 seconds left in the game, Baerg stared at his glove in disbelief, opening and closing it as if looking for the puck which had bounced out and over the top and into the goal behind him. Matt's fourth goal of the night was assisted by Mike McRae and Tobias Falk.
The Blue Tongues were given a powerplay opportunity with just over six minutes left in the game when Sydney's Michael Schlamp was penalised for hooking, however they were unable to convert on the man advantage. The Blue Tongues skated away with the 5-2 victory at full time.
Next weekend the Blue Tongues fly south to Melbourne to play the Melbourne Ice and The Mustangs.
They return to Bundall Iceland for the final home game weekend against the Melbourne Ice on August 6 and 7. Puck drop will be at 4pm.
