In a scene reminiscent of Youngblood, the 2009 tryout squad for the Gold Coast Blue Tongues took to the ice in Iceland, Bundall in a cloud of natural fog for the first of the three Annual Inter-squad games.
Split into two teams (gold and navy) of two lines each, the Blue Tongues squad faced off in a game that assists the coaches in the selection of this year's team. There were familiar faces from last season, such as Ross Howell, Ben Spillane, Jon Bale, Jack Connor and Chris Martin to name a few, as well as some new ones in Swede imports Andre Selander and Henrik Ivarsson and goaltenders Luke Fiveash and Mark Paulson.
This year's team looks fitter, faster and a much more cohesive unit. While the Gold team scrambled on defense, the Navy side was a solid team, playing with precision, skill and great positioning - and a clear advantage of Coach Sands running their lines.
All in all, this season looks promising for the Gold Coast Blue Tongues - especially with the imports living up to their reputations so far!
To have your own sneak peak at this year's Gold Coast Blue Tongues, game 2 is on at Gold Coast Iceland, Bundall on Sunday April 12 and Sunday April 19 at 7.15pm.
